Weshall now take a close look at some aspects ofidiomatic expressions. An significant fact which must be underlined is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial phrases, as a lot of people believe. They can be found in formal style and in colloquial speech. They may emerge in verse or in the masterpieces of Shakespeare and the Bible.

What, then, is an idiom? English is very rich in idiomatic expressions. Actually, it is hard to speak or write English without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even realize that an idiom which he implements is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes understood from the vocabulary.
